goodies from chalice thrift store
zie enjoys finding goodies in the scraplanta bin. you never know what youre gonna get or if its useful. but it is always fun to trowel through it anyway.
thingys zie got from chalice thrift store and scraplanta donation bin: unfinished quilted bag, alabama map, yarn, measuring tape with large numbers, speedball printmaking block; mystic black scarf and green patterned scarf with beads
zie likes collecting paper maps because they make great collage material. maps also are symbolic to zie inner child: zie always wanted to travel the world and share zie art with everyone. paper maps are a recurring reminder to follow zie dreams no matter how outlandish they are.
zie loves collecting scarves. they started as face coverings during covid. now they’ve blossomed into bows for zie head. zie is on a quest to find the biggest poofiest bow to ever bow!
sketching zie lil sis
zie made a sketch of zie lil sis, morayo. zie gave her braids because she loved them when she was a preteen. she also always wore a kermit the frog hoodie. kermit was on her chest, but zie doesnt remember the colors of the actual hoodie.
morayo is a mega private person. she doesnt want fotos of herself online. so when zie asked if zie could draw her and share it online, zie was especting a firm “no”.
“it depends on how good you make me look.”
was her response. 😂 zie had fun painting her hair. sooooo many prettyful layers. morayo likes the vibrant colors and kermit. she said zie should make her lips bigger next time. 👍
kathleen says "yes" to the dress in zie sketch and zie talks about skin tones
a couple years ago, kathleen got married. zie was a bridesmaid in her wedding. this sketch is based off a foto of her after saying yes to the dress.
zie remembers when she shared the foto. she looked incredibly angelic. zie knew that one day, zie would be brave enough to capture her magic.
materials used for morayo and kathleen sketches

- pentel color brush pen (outlines for both figures)
- gouache paint (asorted colors)
- silver watercolor paint for sparkly shimmer
- skin tones: they look best when made with mud, paint dirt, or leftovers from other paletos and paintings.
- warm tones have hints of reds and yellows mised into the overall neutral tone
- cooler tones have hints of blues and purples mised into the overall neutral tone
- skin tones are super desaturated neutrals. they are low in chroma. the key to them is balance. dont dip your brush so deeply into a highly chromatic base color, unless you want to spend more time mising your colors than painting.
- african people have super rich skin tones: the darkest of darks made up of neutral blues and purples
- pale white kathleen has blushes of pink in her. zie used leftover gouache of morayos skin tone and mised it with white. kathleen is white but not stark white though.
these tips help with natural skin tones. in the future, zie will start esperimenting with high chroma unnatural tones again. zie also used silver paint by van gogh to make her dress and eye shadow shimmer.
zie finally decided to change up zie paleto…just a little
over the last few weeks, zie has esperimented with using both gouache and watercolor in the same painting. zie has discovered that zie likes using both instead of having them separate. their strengths harmonize beautifully.
an artistes’ paleto is meant to serve said artiste. we add and remove colors as we continue creating. sometimes it changes with the seasons.
its all about making the paleto work for zie instead of following certain art rules. just esperiment and have fun!
